Laser tattoo removal is a genuine commitment — effective, but gradual by nature — and setting the right expectations from the start makes the whole process much less frustrating.
How the laser actually removes ink
Q-switched laser pulses shatter tattoo ink particles into smaller fragments, which your immune system then clears away naturally over the following weeks. The laser doesn’t remove ink directly — it breaks it down into pieces small enough for your body to eliminate, which is why results appear gradually after each session rather than all at once.
What affects your specific timeline
Ink color (black responds best; greens and light colors are more resistant), density, tattoo age, and your skin tone all affect how many sessions you’ll realistically need — sessions are spaced 6-8 weeks apart to give your body time to clear each round of fragmented ink before the next session.
Getting an honest assessment
We’ll look at your specific tattoo and give you a realistic sense of what to expect — including, for some tattoos, whether significant fading to prepare for a cover-up is a more realistic goal than full removal. Our tattoo removal timeline guide goes into more detail on what the fading process looks like session by session.
